Big Jim tops field for Meadowlands Pace
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Champion colt Big Jim has been installed as the 2-1 favorite for Saturday's $1 million Meadowlands Pace at The Meadowlands. The 2010 two-year-old champion will take on nine rivals in the mile event.
Big Jim, with Phillip Hudon driving, will start from post two for owner James Carr and trainer James 'Friday' Dean. The colt won one of the elimination heats for the Pace last week along with 4-1 second pick Custard The Dragon.
"He was awesome," said Hudon, who will be making his Meadowlands Pace debut. "He paced right to the wire. It's going to be an interesting final."
The three-year-old colt has won three of six starts this year for $452,720 and in 16 career starts has a bankroll of $1,279,924. Big Jim was third to Up The Credit in last month's North America Cup.
Hoosier Cup winner Custard The Dragon will start from post three with 20-year- old Montrell Teague driving. The colt is trained by George Teague Jr., father of the driver.
"He has been a good colt all year long," said the trainer who won the 2007 Meadowlands Pace with Southwind Lynx.
Custard The Dragon, co-owned by George Teague, has seven wins from 13 career starts for $551,667. This year the colt has earned $481,238 with four wins in nine starts.
